Bila-Haut, Cotes du Roussilon Villages

Hello again, everyone. It’s been a couple weeks since I’ve posted anything and those couple weeks were filled with a busy schedule at the day job along with a series of technology challenges. First files on this website spontaneously went corrupt and I had to restore the site and then my hard drive on my home computer failed. I’m still working to get everything back in order, but I’m getting there.

But you’re not here to hear about my woes, you’re here to for wine. And spending some time with a nice glass of wine is a good break for me too.

Today I’m checking out a current vintage of a wine I’ve reviewed previously (and absolutely loved before). Over the past couple years I’ve become a big fan of Michel Chapoutier wines as I’ve found them to deliver good quality at reasonable prices pretty consistently. And the last time I tried their Bila-Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages (the 2011 vintage) it was off the charts good. So I was excited to see if this vintage holds up.

How does it compare to 2011? It’s still a tasty wine although not as mind-blowing as the 2011 vintage. It also has a touch more alcohol by volume, clocking in at 14% while the 2011 was 13.5%.

The aromas are like a bowl filled with a combination of black cherry and black licorice. It also reveals an earthy, tree bark undertone. In the mouth it’s delicious. A medium bodied wine offering black cherry, blackberry and cola flavors. The mouthfeel is pleasant and the acidity is sufficient. It finishes with lingering black cherry flavors and a bit of spice.

Wine: Michel Chapoutier, Bila-Haut Cotes du Roussillon Villages
Variety: Syrah, grenache and carignan
Vintage: 2014
Alcohol: 14%
Rating: 88
Price: $15.00
Disclosure: This wine was received as a sample.
