Summer is still with us and it’s still prime season to enjoy a rosé — although, I enjoy rosé year round.
Some of the best rosé comes from the Rhône region in southern France. One of my favorite appellations there is Tavel, an appellation that creates only rosé and some phenomenal ones at that. But while they’re great wines, you might pay a premium for a wine labeled with the Tavel appellation. Yet, right next to Tavel and all around it is the broader region of Côtes du Rhône. In fact, a wine labeled as Côtes du Rhône may even have grapes from within Tavel — but there’s no guarantee of that. However, you can get a rosé very similar to a Tavel but at a cheaper cost by getting a Côtes du Rhône rosé.
This wine comes from Ferraton Père & Fils, a big producer in the Rhone region with vineyards in several appellations. They also produce wines as a negociant, with grapes purchased from other growers.
I should also note that Ferraton Père & Fils is in a partnership with one of my “go to” Rhone producers, Michel Chapoutier. A fact that gives me some confidence in the quality of their wines before I even taste it. And I wasn’t disappointed once I did taste.
Soft floral, peach, melon and citrus aromas provide a pleasant and refreshing nose. The flavors are light and well balanced on the palate, bringing peach, apple, melon and mineral. The acidity is good. The mouthfeel is nice. It finishes medium long with stone fruit flavors.
