Many casual wine drinkers I know only think of Tuscany when they think of Italian wine, but the number of different wine regions in Italy and the varying styles of wine you can get from those regions is mind blowing.
While I have many “favorite” Italian wine regions, one of them that many Americans are unfamiliar with or overlook is Alto Adige. It’s a region in northern Italy, bordered by Austria and Switzerland, in the southern Alps. I am generally drawn to this regions for their white wines, such as their pinot blanc, pinot grigio and gewürztraminer although about 40% of the wines produced there are reds.
Pinot noir is one red variety that does well in this region and I was excited to give this one from Peter Zemmer a try. It did not disappoint.
The spice and fruit aromas are incredibly lively and complex, offering cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cedar and floral aromas. On the palate it’s crisp and bright, with fresh raspberry and cherry flavors with just enough spice. While there is plenty of depth to the flavors it’s not a heavy wine. The mouthfeel is nice. The acidity is good. It finishes relatively long. It’s a nice wine.
