I’ll be honest, I often don’t think of Germany when I think of pinot gris. Although there’s no good reason for that. Pinot gris is the fourth most common white wine produced in Germany, where it’s often called “grauburgunder.” I guess Oregon and Italy have just dominated my mind when it comes to this variety.
After tasting this one from Weingut Binz, I will likely be thinking of Germany more as this one is delicious.
It’s grown in the Rheinhessen region, which is known mostly for white wines.
Lemon, herbs, melon and wet stone aromas give this wine a fantastic nose. On the palate it’s also quite good, delivering concentrated lemon, granny smith apple, melon and salty mineral flavors. The acidity is amazingly vibrant. The mouthfeel is nice. It finishes with lingering lemon flavors. This is a fantastic pinot gris.
