If you’re a regular reader I’m sure you know I’m a die hard riesling lover. And if you’re one of those who says they don’t like riesling, I’d posit that you haven’t tasted the right riesling.
While I don’t exclusively drink riesling from Germany, I would say that 90% of the time if I’m having riesling it’s a German riesling. The Rhine and Mosel regions, associated with two rivers flowing through Germany’s wine country, are simply idyllic for producing delicious riesling. And it’s not hard to find riesling from these regions at reasonable prices.
This one is from Mosel and it is a bargain at $15. Now I wouldn’t call this a sophisticated or particularly elegant riesling, but that’s OK because it’s just plain delicious.
This is a lower-alcohol wine, with just 10% ABV, which is often the case with riesling. And although higher alcohol has been a trend with wine over the past couple decades, I often prefer lower alcohol levels. It’s all about balance.
Peach, honeysuckle, lychee, citrus and wet stone aromas give this wine a complex and delightful nose. On the palate this is what I would classify as a halb trocken or off dry wine, meaning it has a touch of sweetness. The flavors are predominantly peach, lemon and yellow delicious apple. The acidity is sufficient. The mouthfeel is nice with a touch of creaminess and a touch of effervescence. The finish is long, offering more of the peach and apple flavors.
